While my brave beta readers are diving into Without Light, I’m over here twiddling my thumbs, contemplating the meaning of life, and wondering what snacks to consume during this existential crisis. But fear not! I haven’t just been sitting around in my leggings and oversized sweatshirt (well, not entirely). Instead, I’ve been hard at work adding some extra strokes to this literary painting.

World Building Details

  • Now that I’ve filled those pesky plot holes, it’s time to add the little details that transform this draft into a unique gem. World-building is crucial in a dystopian setting, and I’ve been focusing on the finer points that will bring my world to life. For instance, I’ve spent some quality time thinking about a unique name for a medicinal flower. I’m adding flavor to the narrative, ensuring the world is as rich and textured as the characters who inhabit it.

The Importance of NPCs (Background Characters)

  • Then we have those non-playable characters (NPCs) that linger in the background. They may not have a pivotal role in the plot, but I’ve been carefully considering their appearances, tone, and word choice. Even a snippet of dialogue can reveal so much about the environment and culture they inhabit. Every detail counts, right? I want readers to feel that these characters are part of the tapestry of the world, not just random passersby.

Tissues for my Dialogue Issues

  • Strengthening dialogue has also become a big focus for me. I’ve been re-reading scenes where characters connect to ensure they resonate with readers. I want their conversations to feel authentic and engaging, not just a monotonous passage that sends readers straight to the next chapter. After all, who wants to skip over the good stuff?

The Setup for Book Two

  • And let’s not forget about setting up details for the next book! I love when an author, three books deep, pulls that small puzzle piece from the first book and finally puts it into play. Everything clicks, and suddenly, the larger picture makes perfect sense. I’m laying those groundwork details now, so when readers reach that final twist, they’ll think, “Oh, how clever!”

So, while I wait for feedback, I’m fully invested in these additional touches that will elevate Without Light. Crafting a world that feels lived in and relatable is my priority, and I’m having a blast doing it! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some NPCs to refine and dialogue to polish. The writing never truly stops, does it?
